Episode 34: 1958—Teacher from the Hall of Infamy
As I started the 4th grade, it happened again—room capacity problem! So, they sent the 4th through 6th to a location at the other side of town. The school—if that’s what an old army barracks is called—resembled a prison… ten-foot wall fortress with enclosed patio!
Our new teacher—a run-of-the-mill, poker faced, middle-age man, slim body, average height—wore daily attire: straw hat, pleated pants, and huaraches… most likely, he tumbled down from the school of pain on the hills.
We sat around long wooden tables… actually workbenches from a pottery workshop. Our first day would’ve passed unnoticed—a day in slumber room—if it weren’t for a student who brought a white owl to class. Dead. He and his uncle had killed it the night before with a twenty-two to bring it to class on our first day as a way of learning about our town… two birds with one stone!….
