1957—Smokey birthday

Monday 7, a week after New Year, was my birthday and I thought of celebrating it with fire and smoke. I had just turned 9-years-old, and already felt a man. (Especially now that our parents had left, leaving Alonso and his wife, Sandra, in charge of the house and of the three youngest of the family—Jacobo, Roberto, and me.)

After waiting anxiously for school to end, I stopped at a store a block from our house and bought a pack of cigarettes. The cheapest cigarettes were Carmencitas and Faros. Since I only had 25 centavos, I bought a pack of Carmencitas for 10 centavos (Faros were 15 centavos) and some candy. Then, I asked for a free small box of matches. The whole time, the storeowner didn’t ask anything, he just gave me what I asked for and took the money.

Arriving home, I …

…. Jacobo bled quite a bit.  Sadly, the only medical treatment he got was rubbing alcohol and many bandages to stop the bleeding.
