1956—DJ’s fall from grace

One early afternoon, I was pouring water into the air-cooler with a bucket when a police patrol drove into our driveway, unexpectedly. The bucket slipped off my fingers when I saw two officers in full uniform come out of the vehicle. Without saying a word, they went to the ramada. Right away, DJ came out of the kitchen and greeted them. Then, they began speaking in a low voice. DJ listened with hands on hips and eyebrows contracted at the bridge of the nose. After a short briefing, DJ led them to the kitchen for a private conversation.

Next morning, DJ was gone. …
