1935—A new trade
(SAMPLE OF BOOK I)
After two years in Rosamorada, the small store went broke and their resources depleted. Without money, DJ let go of the maid, the store assistant, and then took the family to live to a nearby place called “El Hacendero de Don García.” There he found work with a Japanese carpenter. Although the said carpenter paid him mediocre wages, at least he learned enough from him to later start up his own shop in the back of the house. Without any more than a saw, a hammer, and a chisel he was soon making suitcases of different sizes, jewelry boxes, small furniture and other miscellaneous items. He sold the large items at his house and the small articles on the streets, going door to door. It wasn’t much money, and he could barely feed his family of six hungry children.
